Social & emotional learning is comprised of
five core competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making. "Because the arts are so based in process, in collaboration, in critical thinking, and because the arts require us to self-regulate, to take on the perspectives of others, the arts also promote responsible decision-making. Being part of something bigger than yourself and having a vested interest in the creative intent of a work of art will, hopefully, guide the student’s responsibility to himself/herself, to the ensemble, to the creator or to a work of art itself." - Brianne Gidcumb |

Illinois State SEL Standard 1C: Demonstrate skills related to achieving personal and academic goals.
Completing a project that stretches over multiple class periods is difficult for some students. Completing a project that stretches over 10-12 class periods that span 3-4 weeks requires planning and goal setting . I think their final products are pretty impressive examples of achieving this academic goal!

Illinois State SEL Standard 1B: Recognize personal qualities and external supports.
This assignment required students to choose 10 positive things about themselves to put in their finished work. While this was difficult for some students, the final pieces turned out FANTASTIC, and many showed a great deal of self introspection. What I love about assignments like this is that you really get to see students' personalities come out.

Warhol Selfies
This assignment required students to take a photo of themselves and turn it into a portrait in the style of Andy Warhol. I think the hardest part of this for most students was finding a picture of themselves that did not already have a filter from Snapchat or other social media. While many people had selfies, most students did not have an unfiltered photo of themselves, so we ended up just taking a few photos in the hallway. It think they turned out pretty good!
Breakout Photos
This assignment was the first opportunity for my 6th-8th graders to experiment with photo editing software. Students got to pick an action photo of an athlete in any sport they like. They then cut it out and made it appear to leap off the TV screen.
Superheroes
Illinois State SEL Standard 1B: Recognize personal qualities and external supports.
This assignment required students to choose a quality that could help people then create a superhero to wield that power!
Not only did students have to think about social awareness and what quality could help others, but they also had to make decisions about how their Superhero would look and why.
